Dear old Robert Hawker (1753-1827) says "that when Jesus comes to comfort His people, and them that mourn, He converts their very troubles into sources of joy, and makes their tears richer that the "spiced wine of the Pomegranate." (from Song of Solomon, speaking of the lover's wine of celebration). "What blessed communion has been produced by the means of soul exercises (trials)! How often have they (trials) drawn the people of God to visit the throne of grace, when a state of uninterrupted prosperity has made them strangers at court. When therefore, the Lord hedges our way up with thorns, and if the thorns will not do to keep us from our earthly lovers, the Lord makes a wall, that we shall not get over. Oh! how gracious is it in the Lord, to allure us into the wilderness trial, and there speak comfortably to us."(Hosea 2:13-14) "By drying up all creature resources, as the prophet's (Elijah) brook, WE MAY BE BROUGHT TO LIVE WHOLLY ON THE FOUNTAIN: and learn that divine riddle of the apostle, which none but a child of God can understand. "as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things."" (II Cor. 6:10)
How blessed I am to be fired! I think I loved that job too much! I was not overly dependent upon the money, although I'm not sure I was the best steward of it. But it took away from several special spiritual relationships, dear friendships that fell by the wayside because of the time spent on this job. I am (theoretically) retired, whatever that means. I am not financially independent. I do not have a 401k, But I do live upon my 419p, "and my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory BY CHRIST JESUS." (Philippians 4:19) No matter what our age, no matter what our calling, Matthew 6:33 is true, "But seek first the Kingdom of God (which is Righteousness, Peace, and Joy in the Holy Spirit -Romans 14:17) and all these things shall be added unto you. "Things" are the same as the "bread" in the Lord's Prayer. In other words, seek to see His Kingdom rule in every event and station of our lives, and don't sweat the small stuff. What we spend most of our earthly lives concerned about is the small stuff. I'm here to testify to you, God keeps His Promises, He cares for His own!!! "Cast your care upon Him, for HE CARES FOR YOU." (I Peter 5:7)
