So what is fallen man to do?  He is now severed from His Creator God and truly is without hope and without God in the world. (Ephesians 2:12)  Instead of seeking out this Glorious God, fallen humanity "did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened--and they changed the Glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man" (Romans 1:21) and on and on.
Enter God's second epoch in His Glorious dealings with creation.  He chose a man out of this mass of fallenness, named Abraham, and through him, promised to make him a great nation. (Genesis 15:1-6)  As the Divine Design unfolded, Abraham's seed increased, the nation flourished, ended up in captivity to Egypt.  In Exodus 19:5, we read "You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' sings AND BROUGHT YOU TO MYSELF. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My Covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is mine."  God made this seed of Abraham His own special people.  Then follows His giving them His Law and the most perfect religion known to man.  Nearly every detail of life was patterned and governed for them.  All they had to do was keep their promise!  Exodus 19:8 "Then all the people answered together and said, 'all that the LORD has spoken we will do'."  What follows is a history of willful disobedience and a pursuing false gods and the dainties of heathen lands. Read in detail Moses' sordid abbreviated history in Deuteronomy 32. We hear God's lament in Deuteronomy 5:29 "Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever."  And in Jeremiah3:20, "Surely as a wife treacherously departs from her husband, so have you dealt treacherously with Me, o house of Israel." says the LORD.
So much more could be told of this chosen people who had the perfect religion, but no heart to walk in it, but who made that religion an idol instead.  What would God have us learn from this long history of opportunity and failure?  I submit it is this.  God can take fallen man and put him in the perfect religion, surround him with all kind of religious boundaries, and that man cannot maintain a relationship with the Holy God of Heaven in doing His Will.  His "worship" is mere lip service! (Isaiah 29:13)  Apart from inseparable union with the Most High God, no man can enter into and maintain the Worship, Praise, and Adoration of the Perfect God as His Nature requires!
Before we leave this consideration, it must be pointed out that the hint of the Seed that should come to crush the serpent becomes a glorious portrait in this covenant relationship of God with Israel.  There are pictures of the Coming Seed on every page, but Israel did not see them.  From the tabernacle they woke up to each morning to the tinkling bells on the high priests garments, the Seed was being declared to them, "But their minds were hardened. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament--even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart."  (II Corinthians 3:14-15)  Praise God for the next epoch!!  Be prepared for the Glorious Revelation!

"The manifestation of the Glory of the Blessed Trinity is the utmost end of all the works of God."   Edward Samuel (1812-1896)
To that purpose, the Glorification of His Beautiful Triune Essence, a threefold plan flowed out of the will of the Father, found its manifestation in the Delighted Obedience of the Son, and its Glorious implementation by the Holy Spirit.  Be careful in trying to establish sequence here, our God is Eternal and time and sequence as we are bound by has no part in His Essence.  We must humbly accept that and depend on His Revelation--the Bible, and what it says.
Let me speak of this plan in terms of three epochs, the first two building to the climax of the Full Glory of God being manifested in the Face of Christ Jesus, the God/Man.  But I am getting ahead of myself.
Epoch #1  Creation, the fall, & the dispersing of humanity.
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.....Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our Image, according to our Likeness........The Lord planted a garden eastward in Eden and there He put the man whom He had formed."  Genesis 1:1, 24, &  2:8    God created the perfect man, from the finest "blueprint", gave Him the incredible resource of His Own Image, placed him in the perfect environment, a garden of His Own Making, with a compatible companion suitable to him, & gave him an honorable occupation.  Imagine tending a garden with no weeds, no mud, and no pois0n ivy or mosquitoes!
Oh, by the way, the Triune God included one small prohibition, a very small prohibition.  "Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend it and keep it. (Notice, no resume' or job hunting!)  And the LORD God commanded the man saying, 'of every tree of the garden you may freely eat:  but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat , for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."  Gen 2:15-17   There is a lot more to the details of this epoch, man couldn't resist the temptation to be as God, entered the realm of unbelief which is the domain of death--became eternally separated from the Life of God and the Promise of  Peace, Joy, and Provision.  And crucially, the Image of God in created man was shattered in this "death plunge".  It is interesting that there is much debate about what this image of God in man was/is.  That discussion in itself verifies the tragedy of the image loss!  We can't see the Glory of the Image of God in man, we can only guess as to what it meant.  We see hints, but as we look at ourselves and other human beings, we definitely do not see God!  We could go on and trace out the "death throes" that grew out of the first couples' unbelief, but that is outside this brief outline.  What was God's purpose in this historical time frame, creation, fall, death and scattering?  Let me suggest that God is teaching us that even a perfectly created man, placed in a perfect environment, made in the image of God, but who is not indwelt by, inseparably united to the Triune God, cannot maintain adoration, worship and obedience to that Glorious Good God for more than a "blip" in time.
Ah, but there is a glimmer of anticipation of the greater Glory!  In the curse on the serpent we read, "and I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise His heel."  Genesis 3:15  The Seed of the woman!  (See the article, "Satans' hatred of Women")

Next time:  Israel and the Law.

This Wondrous God of Whom we are speaking has willed that "all the Perfections of His Godhead might be infinitely and everlastingly glorified."  (William Romaine 1714-1795) His Glory is His Goodness and encompasses all of His Essence.  The display of that Goodness is essential to His very Nature.  He MUST show forth His Glory.  Were He to restrict the manifestation of His Glorious Goodness, He would cease to be God Who is alone Good. (Matthew 19.16)  In Exodus 33:18-19 we discover that His Glory IS His Goodness.  Moses asked God, "Please, show me Your Glory."  God's answer in vs 19 is this, "I will make all my Goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the Name of the LORD before you."   And that full revelation of God's name is in Exodus 34:6-7 where the LORD's seven fold "attributive" Name is proclaimed.  As the old Puritan, Thomas Goodwin says, "five parts Mercy, two parts Justice and Judgement."  This is His Essence, His Nature.  He ever manifests Himself in this measure.  This name of Mercy becomes the focal point of Israel in their sins and by their prophets.  Solomon, in dedicating the temple, speaks of his assurance that Israel will sin, and says, "When they pray toward this place and confess your Name, and turn from their sin because you afflict them, then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of  Your servants, your people Israel."  (I Kings 8:35-36, )  This is why Mercy is the refrain of all the Psalms, 26 times in Psalm 136.  This is the Revelation of God---He is Good, He is Glorious, He is full of Mercy.  It is essential that He display His Glorious Goodness for all eternity because God Alone is Good, and if any Good is to be in creation, human or otherwise, it must be of God Alone!!!
