Blessed are they that Mourn   Matt. 5:4

Remember:  The Beatitudes describe the Blessed Life of total dependence on the Most High God!!!

Mourning is always in the context of death!!!  While on this “home of death”, there will always be mourning among the people of God.  Only in the New Heavens and the New Earth will our mourning be turned into complete Joy.  For now we abide in the Presence of the Sustaining Comforter by faith.  Soon, we shall be in the uninterrupted Presence of the Fullness of Joy

The three, Holy Spirit birthed, motivations for mourning.

1.   Mourning over our own sin.  Our sin testifies to our spiritual death!
Psalm 51:1-4   The starting point of repentance unto saving faith is this very understanding                                “Against You, You only have I sinned, and done this evil in Your Sight.”
II Corinthians 7:8-11  Notice vs 10—“Godly sorrow produces repentance unto salvation; but the                 sorrow of this world produces death.”  The sorrow of this world grovels in its own misery but never                     comes to David’s acknowledgement—“against You, You only have I sinned.”  Human sorrow bathes                     itself in the blame game, which only tightens the noose of its misery.  But “Godly sorrow                                 produces repentance unto salvation”.

Warning!   Many come to an earthly sorrow when hearing the Gospel, coming face to face with their misery, having all their false coverings torn off.  Don’t be fooled by the “accessories” of worldly repentance,  strong crying (as in Judas’ case), resolutions, and good deeds, even intense “bible study”(aka the bible as the ultimate “self help” manual).  Time will reveal the “infertility” of their soil.

Psalm 6  A mourners’ biography.  “I am weary with my groaning…My eye wastes away because of                     my grief.”
Isaiah 30:15-17  The non mourners’ spirit—self sufficiency.
                2.  Mourning over sin(death) that surround us.
Ezekiel 9:4  The marking of the mourners.  When the mind of Christ, the Righteousness of the                         High and Lofty One, takes control of us, our response is mourning for the fallenness in His creation.                          Godly mourning preserves us from self righteous judgmentalism.
Revelation 7:3-17  The mourners, sealed on their foreheads with the Name of the                         Father (Eph. 3:14-15), these are the remnant of Israel. (Romans 4:16, 9:6-8; Galatians 3:7-9, 29,                     6:15-16
                    3.  Mourning over the Death of the Holy One.  Of course, at the root of this is the awareness that His Death was the cost for our sins!!!   Zechariah 12:10-13:1, 13:6-7a/John 19:31-37

But don’t stop there!!! “For they shall be comforted!!!  If all we do is mourn over ours’ and others’ sins, then we ignore the glorious benefit and purpose of our Lord’s sacrifice and the nature of His Kingdom.  Remember Romans 14:17?   It is manifest in Righteousness, Peace, and Joy in the Holy Ghost.  And always remember that it is the Kingdom of the Son of the Father’s Love. (Colossians 1:13

Psalm 68:19-20  “Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, the God of our salvation.  Our God is the God of salvation; And to God the Lord belong escapes from death!!!  (Hebrews 2:14-15)
The Benefits:
                        1.  The promises:  All of the promises have an active culmination in eternity!!!
Isaiah 57:15  The purpose of the High and Lofty One is to create Revival in the spirit and heart of the humble and contrite ones.  They become His Dwelling Place and they are to reflect His Pleasure (Matt. 3:17) and rest Heb. 4:9-10) in the Perfections of His Beloved Son, in His Person and His Work.  And I’m not talking about some “yearly revival”!
Zechariah 13:8-9   The Promise of the Remnant of the People of God!!!
Ezekiel 34:22-26   His people will live in a covenant of Peace and showers of blessing!!
Ezekiel 37:21-28   Our David, our Prince (Acts 2:22-36) is our King forever and the tabernacle of God is with us. (Revelation 21:3)  Note:  This Ezekiel passage is right after the New Covenant text of Ezekiel 36:22-28
I Peter 1:3-9    An inheritance incorruptible.
II Peter 3:10-13   A new heavens and a new earth wherein dwells Righteousness.
Revelation 21-22   The glorious description of the Eternal Abode.
                        2.  John 14:16-18   The Comforter that abides with us FOREVER!!!  Notice that the Comforter, the Spirit of God is the Spirit of Adoption and He is the Indwelling “Adoption Papers”, constantly teaching us that we are no longer servants, but children of the Most High God!!!
Romans 8:14-17   The Spirit bears witness that we are the children of God.  Therefore, we don’t                         just hope in the promises, we can count on the promises because the Abba Spirit abides in us Eternally.
Galatians 4:4-7   Not slaves but sons, and if a son, then an Heir of God through the Perfect                                 Son, Christ Jesus.  It doesn’t get any better than that!!!

Question:  Are you a comforted mourner?  Or are you just a mourner.   The High and Holy One dwells with the contrite and humble for the purpose of reviving the spirits and hearts of the contrite and humble.  Are you living in this true Holy Spirit Revival???  Is the Joy of the Lord your strength?

Isa.  61:1-3   Remember, our King was anointed to (Vs 3) “console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the Oil of Joy (Gal. 5:22) for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.
