The flesh will allow for temporary reformations--for they become the soil for "comparative religion". By that I mean, "I thank you Father, that I am not like one of these" religion. We can always find someone worse than us! Comparativeness is a good thermometer to check our spiritual health. We usually will find that we have a raging fever of comparativeness. The healthy soul has only one measurement, and that is the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ! (Eph 4:12-13)
But a heart that is truly taught of the Spirit of God, a heart that has had intimate fellowship with its' own plague (I Kings 8:38) cannot be content with a momentary elevation based upon the comparison with another fallen human being, no matter how "pious" that individual may be. Even a "I'm better that I was yesterday" focus will not suffice. No, the soul for whom the Spirit of God has drawn aside the veil of "good flesh", the soul that has been allowed a clear view of its pollution, its utter helplessness and hopelessness--that soul must have a better hope, a longing for a better purity, one not of this fallen world.
That soul must come to the Table of the Blood and Body of our Lord Jesus Christ and feast continually upon Him. (John 6:53-58) However, as long as there is a vestige of hope that our flesh will get somewhat better, Christ Jesus will not be longed for nor sought out. We will continue to put the "quarters of our efforts" into the vending machine falsely called grace and expect the desired answer to fall through the slot.
"Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that you believe in Him Whom He has Sent.....And Jesus said unto them, I Am the Bread of Life: he that comes to Me shall never hunger; and he that believes on Me shall never thirst." John 6:29 & 35
