Hebrews 1:3b-5
The Son of Man, Son of God is exalted above the angels.
A "Pink" thought on 1-3b: A.W. Pink states that we have, in these verse, our Lord in all of His offices. As the Word spoken by the Father, He is our Prophet. As being in the very Image of the Father, and His rightful Heir, He is our King. In His purging our sins and sitting at the right hand of the Father, He is our High Priest. He is all fallen man needs for eternal salvation, eternal fellowship with the Father.
Heb 1:3b: "When He had by Himself purged our sins".
1. The newer translations from shorter Greek manuscripts miss the key element. Rom 5:15, 17-19The One man, Jesus Christ. This work is not a co-operative effort with any other man, nor, as we shall see, with any angelic being. This is the work of the Divine Son, fulfilling the Will of the Divine Father, by the power of the Divine Spirit! By Himself—never forget that!! Only His Blood cleanses us from all sin! (I John 1:7)
2. "Sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high".
Psalms 110:1; Matt 26:64; Mark 16:19;
Acts 2:34-35 Peter makes sure his Jewish audience understands that Psalms 110:1 wasn't talking about David.
Acts 7:56 Stephen sees the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God, perhaps standing as the judge of those throwing the stones at his child, Stephen.
a. His position gives the position or "locaton" of the ministry that He fulfills throughout the rest of the book. On the basis of his finished work as the sin bearer, the punishment bearer for his people, He now is in the position to ensure the constant outflow of the benefits of His once-done work on the cross. His position is one of complete authority from the Majesty on High. No one can "nay-say" His eternal intercession for His people. He constantly "has the Father's ear".
Heb 1:4 Better than the angels. Remember, we are in Son of Man territory!
Philippians 2:5-11; I Peter 3:21-22; Psalms 2:7-8 So how did He inherit a better name than the angels? Well, that's specifically verse 5
Heb 1:5 "You are My Son, today I have begotten You." Is the Son created? NO!! That is Blasphemous!! The Son is eternally in the bosom of the Father. (John 1:18) There are many opinions as to this "begetting", but:
1. Acts 13:26-39 Here, Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, gives the meaning. What does this phrase allude to? The resurrection of our Lord! (Vs 33-35)
a.Psalms 2:7 Note the whole Psalm. We are here seeing the exaltation of a Special King. One who inherits the nations and the ends of the earth. The absurd nations of the earth are commanded to kiss this King/Son lest He be angry and judge them. (Vs 12) Remember "proskuneo", the Greek word for worship, partially derived from a word that means "to kiss as a dog does its master's hand." OT and NT, the message is the same—"Kiss the Son"—worship the Son, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!
b. Isaiah 55:3-5 Paul adds this passage (Acts 13:34), as the sure mercies of David, the eternal covenant of and everlasting king who again inherits the nations.
c. II Samuel 7:12-17 The root promise of the Sure Mercies of David.
d. Psalms 89:24-29 This is the promise in praise form.
Summary of Paul's meaning:
Jesus was declared to be the Beloved Son at His baptism and his transfiguration by the word of the Father and the emblem of the Holy Spirit. But He was manifested and verified as the Prophet, Priest, King Son by the Power of His Resurrection! All of the Covenant Promises are intact and sure in this Man, Christ Jesus! Death could not bring his ministry an end!
Romans 1:1-6 Notice the elements of this passage.
The Gospel of God: Paul "fleshes out" the Gospel of the Grace of God in the Person of our Begotten God!
The Promise—in time past by the prophets/Hebrews 1:1.
His Son Jesus Christ our Lord/Heb 2:2.
Born of the seed of David according to the flesh (Son of Man) Jesus is seated on the eternal throne of David as our Priest King. Heb 1:3b
Declared to be the Son of God with power. Heb 1:5
What power? According to the Spirit of Holiness!
How? By the resurrection from the dead by the Spirit of Holiness. Romans 6:4 glory=Spirit
Nations—Interesting that this text is to Romans, a people that knew not the covenants and promise of ` Israel, but out of whom, some of the "nation inheritance" of Psalm 2 would be drawn. Heb 1:2
Practical application:
This is your right now God! This is the One who indwells you right now by His Holy Spirit, the very same Spirit Who raised this God/Man from the dead. This is the God Who willed this "so great salvation" from all eternity, and then worked out every detail in time precisely for the complete and sure fulfillment of it in the Man Christ Jesus. This is the God who has shed abroad His Love in your hearts by His Holy Spirit! (Romans 5:5) He is your HOPE!
So what is your pidly problem? Is your business failing? Is you car dying? Are you kids going astray? Do you have an impossible boss? Is disease and pain your constant companion? Isn't you life what you want it to be? Don't your parents understand you?
Isaiah 51:1, 4, 7, 12-16 "I, even I, am He who comforts you. Who are you that you should be afraid of a man who shall die, and of the son of a man who will be made like grass? And you forget the LORD your Maker, Who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundation of the earth!
Here is your HOPE, here is your STRENGTH, here is your HELP. And He is now seated at the right hand of the Majesty on High, ever living to make intercession for you. And remember, He always has the Father's ear!
