The Root and Forms of the word translated "Propitiation"
Hebrews 3:17; Romans 3:25; I John 3:2, 4:10

#2431 hilarios:  Cheerful, joyous, prompt to do anything!
II Corinthians 9:7  "God loves a cheerful giver."
#2432 hilarotees:  Cheerfulness, readiness of mind, eager.
Romans 12:8  "He who shows mercy, with cheerfulness."
#2433 hilaskomai:  To render propitious to one's self, to appease, conciliate to oneself.
Luke 18:13  (the publican) "God be merciful to me a sinner."
Hebrews 2:17  (our Faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God)  "to make reconciliation (to God) for the sins of the people."

From the New Strong's Expanded Dictionary of Bible Words:
"It is never used of any act whereby man brings God into a favorable attitude or gracious disposition.  It is God Who is "propitiated" by the vindication of His Holy & Righteous Character, whereby through the provision He has made in the vicarious and expiatory sacrifice of Christ, He has so dealt with sin that He can show mercy to the believing sinner in the removal of his guilt and the remission of his sins.  (Remember, He doesn't just show mercy, it is His very Name!!  Ex 34:6-7 RF)
Through the "propitiatory" sacrifice of Christ, he who believes upon Him is by God's own act (Romans 3:21-26) delivered from the justly deserved wrath and comes under the covenant of grace.
Never is God said to be reconciled, (because He is immutable and never changes RF), a fact itself indicative that the enmity exists on man's part alone, and that it is man who needs to be reconciled to God, and not God to man!

By the giving up of His sinless life sacrificially (in His perfect body prepared for him), Christ annuls the power of sin to separate between God and the believer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

#2434 hilasmos: An appeasing, propitiating, an atonement, an expiator, a propitiation.
I John 2:2  "He is the propitiation for our sins."
I John 4:10  "God sent His Son to be the propitiation for ous sins."

New Strongs:  "It is used in the NT of Christ Himself as "the propitiation," (in the I John passages), signifying that He Himself, through Him alone, the violated holiness and righteousness of God by man's sin has been propitiated (satisfied).  This is the personal means through which God shows mercy to the sinner who believes on Christ as the One thus provided."

#2435  hilasterion:  An expiatory place or thing,            Romans 3:25  (Christ)"A propitiation through faith in His bloodi
Hebrews 9:5  "And above it (ark of the covenant) were the cherubim of glory overshadowing The Mercy Seat."

Thayer's Greek Lexicon:  (In ancient Greek) A monument built to propitiate the gods.  Biblically, the Mercy seat.

Jesus Christ is our Mercy Seat, our Eternal Propitiatory Monument set up by the Holy God of Heaven, as the complete, total, never to be improved upon, propitiation (satisfaction) for our sins.  Our Jesus has brought Satisfaction & Cheerfulness to the Holy God of heaven with all who are found IN HIM, through the New Creation covenant in the Blood of His Son.  This the Father testified to and Jesus' baptism and transfigurationl  "This is my Beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased,"  The Father is completely propitiated, satisfied, completely delighted in this Man, Christ Jesus, His Son. And our Propitiatory Monument is seated in the heavenlies, at the Right Hand of the Father, assuring our Rightful Place in the Courts of the Holy God of Heaven!!!

#2436  hileos  (New Strongs) Cheerful, as attractive, i.e. propitious; God be God be gracious.  It is used only of God.
Matthew 16:22  "be it far from me" may have the meaning, "God have mercy on You."
Hebrews 8:12  "For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and lawless deeds I will remember no more."

Beloved, do you believe it?  Or more properly, do you believe Him!  Remember, this is the only work of God,  "That you believe on Him Whom He has sent."  John 6:29  Belief or unbelief, which will it be????????

Propitiation (pro pish ih AY shun) [from the Nelson Illustrated Bible Dictionary]

The atoning death of Jesus on the cross, through which He paid the penalty demanded by God (by God's Righteous Being of perfection  RF) because of peoples sins, thus setting them free from sin and death.  The word means "appeasement."  Thus, propitiation expresses the idea that Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for sin the a Holy God demanded.  (because He is inherently Holy)

From the Hebrew-Greek Key Study Bible:
#2433 Hilaskomai    To make reconciliation.  Propitiation  may have a personal object, the sinner, or an impersonal object, our sins.  It provides the satisfaction demanded by God's justice whereby the removal of sins is attained.  (a verbal construction, a Divine Action)

#2433 Hilasmos  Propitiation, only in I John 2:2; 4:10  To propitiate, appease because of Christ's sacrifice.  The benefit of Christ's death for man.  Hilasmos indicates not only the benefit of reconciliation, but the manner whereby we were made friends of God.  Hilasmos refers to Christ as the One Who propitiates and offers Himself as the propitiation.  He is both the sacrifice and the High Priest sacrificing Himself.

#2435 Hilasterion  Mercy seat, viewed as a subject.  The lid or covering of the Ark of the Covenant, made of pure gold, on and before which the high priest was to sprinkle the blood of the expiatory sacrifices on the great day of atonement, and where the Lord promised to meet His people.  Christ-the true Mercy Seat—therefore it means a place of conciliation, of expiation……..Jesus Christ is designated the hilasterion (Heb 9:5 & Rom 3:25) because He is designated not only as the place where the sinner deposits his sin, be He Himself is the means of expiation (the means of atoning or making reparation for our sins) .  Unlike the OT priests, Jesus' means was His own Body an Blood!

#2436 Hileos  To be propitious, favorable, merciful.  Hileos implies an invocation invocation of mercy for the overturning of evil, that the evil that others are contemplating to do (or have done).
