The "Right Hand Truth" of the Atonement
Hebrews 8:1
Vs 1 "Now this is the Main Point of the things we are saying."
A. "We have such a High Priest"
1. Remember our questions from last week?
a. Our High Priest is as much God as the Father has been God from all eternity! (Chap 1 esp 1:3a)
b. He is as much man as the Triune God can make Him! (chap 2) As this
Man, He is "touched with the feeling of our infirmities". (4:14-16)
B. "Who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens."
1. The right hand of Eternal Power—Power enough to keep us for all Eternity!
a. Ps 110:1-4: Quoted in Mt 22:41-46, 26:62-65; Heb 1:3&13
b. This "Right hand of the Power/Majesty" theme is crucial to the understanding to the New testament!
1) The "eyewitness accounts": Mark 16:19; Acts 2:32-35, 7:54-60; 2) Rom 8:34-35, Col 3:1(crucial to living Godly in a fleshly world) Heb 10:12&12:2.
3) Eph 3:15-23 esp vs 19-20 Here we see that this "Right Hand Truth" is the assurance that the Power of the Eternal Father is directed toward us by this tandem truth of the Father simultaneously raising Jesus from the dead and placing Him at His Own Right Hand, the Place of our Eternal safety and keeping. Our Lord's Resurrection and His Enthronement must never be thought of separately. They are the "whole" of a complete work!!!!
Note: The ONLY reason we do not fall away to eternally wallow in our sins, is the resurrection and intercession of our Jesus, our Great High Priest! Recall John 6:39 "All that the Father has given Me, I shall lose nothing! Hebrews 7:25 "Therefore He is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He ever lives(by the Power of the Resurrection) to make intercession for them(at the Right Hand of the Majesty in the Heavens."
C. Psalm 51 and repentance and restoration.
1. This is an OT anticipation of the fruit & benefits of the ministry of the NT High Priest!
He dares to ask the Holy Righteous God to blot out his sin. Vs1, 9
He doesn't hide like Adam and Eve, he is very open about His sin and Whom it is
against! Vs 3-4
He acknowledges absolute dependence on the Holy Spirit! Vs 11-12
He knows what God wants from His people. Vs 17
He knows that God alone can restore and renew! Vs 7, 10, 12, 14
He desires his "sin occasion" to become a declaration to the praise of His God for His Mercy! Vs 1, 13, 15
D. This is the foundational truth of repenting from dead works and living by continual faith in God. Hebrews 6:1
1. Godly repentance is a "lifestyle" for the new man on this earth. Eph 4:20-24 It is kind of like taking of the old clothes and putting on the new. Acts 11:18
2. Legalism, depending on the works of the law, fleshly resolutions, fleshly mutilations (Phil 3:2-3)
cannot restore a person to repentance. Heb 6:6
3. Our Jesus, our Man, seated at the Right Hand of the Majesty/Power, living eternally in that exalted position, to Be the Eternal intercession in the Presence beyond the veil, so desperately needed by His frail, weak, going astray brethren—This Man, in this Ministry, is the ONLY reason you and I continue in the faith, and climb out of our sins into the lap of the Eternal Merciful Righteous Father! This is the sure mercies of David! (Isa 55:3, Acts 13:33-37
