The Power of a "Living Will"
Hebrews 9:11-28
I. Vs 11-15 Our Christ came as High Priest of Good Things to Come.
A. The First Will and Testament: Notarized by the seal of blood, the blood of goats and calves.(vs 12)
1. Vs 13 Such animal sacrifices were the requirement of the First Will and Testament for the reception of the provisions of that Will to maintain communication with the Executor of that Will, The Holy God of Heaven and Earth.
2. The realm of blessing of this Will and Testament was on the earth and the document(the tabernacle worship) was but a shadow that was passing away! Vs 8-10
B. The Last Will and Testament: Vs. 11, 15 This final Will is the Promise and Provision of "the Good Things to come, a greater and more perfect communion and communication with the Holy God of Heaven and Earth.
1. This Will also required death and the blood of a sacrifice, but this death and blood was that of the Eternal Christ Who offered Himself through the Eternal Holy Spirit.
2. This Blood was effective—it cleared the conscience of those whose names were in the will, it redeemed the sins and transgressions that occurred under the first Will and Testament, and is the assurance of the Promise of the Eternal Inheritance contained in the Last Will and Testament.
II. Vs 16-22 The provision of the benefits of a will requires the death of the writer (testator) of the will! Its purpose and benefits are activated only upon death.
Note: Death was the result of the breaking of the Covenant of creation, therefore, death is the requirement for the restoration of God's Creative Purpose.
A. Everything having to do with communication with God had to be sprinkled with blood, even the book of the law.
1. In a real sense, the continual & repetitive sprinkling of the blood was a testimony to the separation that death has placed between the Eternal God and His continually dying man!
III. Vs 23-28 It is essential that the "Good Things to Come, the Heavenly Things must be purified, cleansed with better sacrifices that that of continual dead animals.
It is not that the Good Things themselves need cleansing, but that the way of access to those things must be made pure and clean. Lev 15:31, Titus 1:15
A. Vs 24 Here is what is at stake--access into the very Presence of God! Not once a year, but continually and eternally.
1. Our Jesus is our Last Will and Testament, there will be no other! a. His is the required death that makes the Will valid and effectual.
b. His Blood is the "notary seal" that witnesses to all the validity of the document! "This cup is the New Covenant in My Blood." I Cor 11:25
c. His Blood is shed and sprinkled on the document of communion just once—because he offered Himself through the Eternal Spirit! Vs 14 His once done effectual sacrifice HAS PUT AWAY SIN for those whose names are in the Will!
B. And what is the Inheritance promised in this Will? Remember Presence! Vs 24
1. A Name! Hebrews 1:1-5; Romans 8:9-17; Galatians 3:26-4:7; I John 3:1; Hebrews 2:10.
2. Our Jesus is the Eternal Executor of His Estate, ever in the Presence for us, mediating His Sonship to His Father's adopted children! All of the "Good Things to Come" are ours by our union with and in The Son! His Father is our Father, His inheritance is our inheritance. "Behold the Manner of Love the Father has bestowed upon us!"
Vs 28 Are you eagerly waiting for Him, or are you too busy burying your dead? Mt 8:19-22
