The Justified Shall Live By Faith
Hebrews 11:1
"Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for, or prove the existence of the realities that remain unseen." Jerusalem Bible
11:1 Faith is the operating principle of the Justified Life! It is the marrow that sources the very existence of the Believer in Christ. Our inheritance is in Christ Jesus Who is seated in the heavenlies and faith is the connection that enables us to draw near, to hold fast, to live out of His fullness in the here and now until we see Him face to Face!
Remember, faith is the gift of God! Ephesians 2:8
Remember, faith has only one resource—The Word of God! Romans 10:17
A. Faith is the substance #5287 hupostasis Literally "a standing under", a foundation, hence the quality of confidence which leads one to stand under, endure, or undertake anything. (Heb 3:14 translated "confidence") In Heb 1:3 it is translated "person"! The Son is the express image of the Father's person—hupostasis. He is our Substance, the source of our confidence!!
Note: Faith gave such reality, such substance, to what the Hebrews believed, that the Promise was more real than their earthly goods. That is why they could be so joyful in the face of losing everything for the sake of their love bond with Christ and His people!!!! (10:34)
B. Faith is the evidence #1650 elegchos. In II Timothy 3:16, it is translated reproof. It is from #1651 which means to confute, admonish, to refute, convince. Faith is therefore, the gift of God that admonishes us, convinces us, testifies to us, gives evidence to us that the heavenly realities are far more "real" that the earthly stuff we deal with daily. The Heavenly Realities are Eternal, the earthly stuff passes away with the using. (I Cor 7:31)
C. The focus of faith—"the things hoped for". Hope in Hebrews:
3:6 "But Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end."
Ask yourself:
What are the benefits of this hope stated in this passage?
What is to be the duration of this hope?
6:11 "And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end." Same questions!
6:18-19 "that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters behind the veil. Same questions!
7:19 "for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in a better hope, through which we draw near to God." Same questions!
D. So what is this HOPE?
Acts 2:26-28 "Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; moreover my flesh will also rest in HOPE, because You will not leave my soul in Hades, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption." (Psalms 16:8-11)
Acts 23:6, 26:6, 28:20 David's HOPE was Israel's HOPE. Jesus was David's HOPE. Paul was persecuted and martyred because he proclaimed that Jesus was David's HOPE!!
Titus 1:2 (according to the faith of God's elect) "in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began."
Titus 3:7(4-7) "that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the HOPE of eternal life."
E. So where does HOPE come from?
Romans 5:3-5 "Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured our IN our hearts by the Holy Spirit Who was given to us." Ephesians 3:16-20
Romans 15:13 "Now may the God of HOPE fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in HOPE by the power of the HOLY SPIRIT."
II Corinthians 1:23 The Holy Spirit is our guarantee, the Hope Keeper in our hearts!
