It's All About Jesus!!
Hebrews Review and 3:1-6
This is a test!
1. To whom was Hebrews written?
2. What were they facing?
3. What error does chapter one address?
4. How does the author refute this error?
a. In chapter one?
b. In chapter 2:5-18?
Note: The "so great salvation" of 2:1-4 is all about Jesus, Who He Is and the work the Father sent Him to do. We neglect Him to our eternal peril! "Jesus" occurs 954 times in the NT. "Christ" occurs 564 times. He is the subject of all of scripture. He more than came to save us, He is our Salvation. He is God and He is Man, unique in qualification, totally sufficient for the salvation of His people.
Consider Him!
The second error: Some sects taught that Moses would return as the Messianic deliverer. Not only is He greater than the angels, He is greater than Moses!
Heb 3:1
Holy brethren—not holy in themselves, but called out, set apart unto God. As in Ex 19:4 He called us out of our Egypt unto Himself. I Cor 1:26-31 Our calling, our setting apart unto God separates us unto God, and any inner Holiness comes because we are in Christ Jesus.
Consider The Apostle—the only place in the NT where "apostle" refers to Jesus. Apostle means sent one, but also bears the idea of an emissary, an ambassador sent with a message. Perhaps it occurs here because of 1:1. Jesus Christ is the message sent from the Father. The Gospel of John "fleshes out" this apostolic ministry of our Lord.
1. Christ revealed the Father's Name—Remember, "Father" and pronouns referring to Him occur over 130 times in John. John 17:6 "I have manifested Your Name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world." Matt 11:27 "All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and he to whom the Son wills to reveal Him."
2. Christ did the works of the Father—John 5:19 "the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner." John 14:10 "The Father that dwells in Me, He does the works".
3. Christ speaks the Father's words. John 3:34 " For He Whom God sent speaks the words of God." John 8:26 "He Who sent Me is True' and I speak to the world those things I heard from me." Vs 28-29 "but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. And He Who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left me alone, for I always do those things that please Him."
High Priest is the subject of most of the rest of the book, its main point! 8:1 We will not dwell on it here as it will be the dominant theme shortly!
The Christ Jesus of our confession--note that it is our confession, not our profession. Rom 10:9 Heart and mouth are united in confession. Matt 12:34 "for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
Heb 3:2 Jesus was faithful to the Father Who appointed him, just as Moses was. Notice "house"—that is household, family. And whose household—we will see that there is one household, and it is God's! I Cor 4:2 And according to Ephesians 3:14-15, We bear the Father's name. We are His love gift to His Son! John 6:37
Heb 3:3 Jesus (this One) is more worthy of Glory than Moses. Why? Because the builder of the house is worthy of more honor than the house! Zechariah 6:12-13; I Chron 17:7-15
Heb 3:4 Jesus, the Builder, is God!! This probably has in mind 1:2&10. Also reminds of the contrast between Moses and Christ in I Cor 3:7-17
Heb 3:5 Moses was indeed faithful—in spite of losing his cool. In whose house, his own? No, He was a servant, a steward in God's house! Num 12:6-8 He was a testimony, a shadow of the coming Eternal Lord over the True House.
Heb 3:6 Christ as a Son over His Own House—by inheritance from the Father as in 1:2 & John 6:37-45
Whose house we are—I Peter 2:1-10, Eph 2:14-22 God has only one house, His remnant of grace, those who are of faith as was their father Abraham. This House knows no "human nationality"!Gal 3:6-9; Rom 4:13-16, 9:6-9, 11:5-6, 14
IF! We hold fast the confidence…..firm to the end—this goes back to 2:1-4 This is that "faith w/o works is dead" part. There is no "decisional regeneration" in the book of Hebrews (or in any other scripture). Remember, there is only one saving soil In our Lord's parable of salvation. Mt 13:18ff Biblical salvation brings forth fruit, some 10 fold, some 100 fold, but there will be fruit. We are not called to be fruit inspectors, but to remind one another that the owner of the vineyard is coming soon and will expect his harvest!
The Confidence, the rejoicing of hope—Ps 36:7-9; II Tim 1:12. Our Confidence and Hope must rest only in Jesus Christ the Righteous, and His perfect work on our behalf. He is the Master and Builder of the House of God, and His blueprint is perfect.
Next Study: Rest isn't just a good idea. It is the evidential fruit of belief.
